1. A great teacher can earn up to £65,000 as a leading practitioner
The leading practitioner pay range from 1 September 2014 applies to qualified teachers who are employed in posts that the relevant body has determined have the primary purpose of modelling and leading improvement of teaching skills.

2. Get £25,000 tax-free to train to teach
Bursaries are available for trainees on eligible postgraduate courses in England. Bursary amounts will vary depending on teaching subject and degree class or highest relevant academic qualification.

3. Teachers start on a salary of between £22k and £27k
Teachers can expect to start on a minimum of £22,023 – or £27,543 in inner London.
Recent research showed that final-year university students from the UK’s leading universities on average expect starting salaries of £23,700.

4. Teaching is a career for achievers. Three-quarters of new teachers now have a 1st or 2:1 degree
Three-quarters of new trainee teachers now have a first-class or a 2:1 degree – the highest proportion ever recorded. 73% of new postgraduate trainee teachers now have a 1st or a 2:1. 17% of new teachers have a first-class degree – a higher proportion than ever.

5. Teacher training is better than ever before
91% of newly qualified secondary teachers, and 89% of newly qualified primary teachers highly rated the overall quality of their training.

Even if it is not your first choice, you could consider applying to train to teach maths, physics, chemistry, computing, design and technology or a language. You could benefit from a subject knowledge enhancement course programme, which allows you to top up your subject knowledge.

9 out of 10 newly qualified teachers were employed within 6 months of completing training. This is the highest figure it’s been in a decade.
